A construction firm, Caldwell Construction Limited, has gone into administration, endangering over 400 jobs. The company, established in 2007, has enlisted administrators from PKF Littlejohn Advisory with offices in Stoke-on-Trent and Warrington, Cheshire.
Paul Smith, a Partner at PKF Littlejohn Advisory UK LLP, highlighted the construction industry’s tough trading environment due to rising costs, project delays, and market uncertainties. Despite a £58.4 million turnover last year, Caldwell’s operating profit was below £1 million. Cashflow and operations were strained in recent weeks, leading to the company’s collapse.
The PKF Littlejohn Advisory team in Manchester and Leeds collaborated with Caldwell’s management to explore solutions but could not prevent insolvency. Joint Administrator, Oliver Collinge, confirmed the company’s decision to enter administration, focusing on supporting employees and stakeholders while evaluating the business’s status and assets.
Separately, Consumer Energy Solutions in south Wales also faced administration, affecting nearly 300 employees. The Swansea and Rhondda Cynon Taf-based company ceased trading immediately, as confirmed on their website. Staff were informed of the job risks via a Teams call just before Christmas, causing distress among employees.
Consumer Energy Solutions attributed the restructuring and job losses to the conclusion of the UK Government’s Energy Company Obligation 4 scheme. The initiative, aiding homeowners in energy upgrades, is ending this year, leading to the company’s closure. Joint administrators were appointed for Consumer Energy Solutions Limited, with no impact on other companies within the City Energy Group.
