A man with two children tragically lost his life during a holiday in the Canary Islands when a wooden railing on a balcony collapsed, causing a fatal 20-foot fall, according to information presented at an inquest today.
Darren Silcox, a well-regarded shopkeeper aged 56, was vacationing in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote, when the incident occurred in the early hours. Alongside another British holidaymaker, Mr. Silcox was standing on the balcony when the railing gave way.
Sadly, Mr. Silcox succumbed to his injuries from the fall, while the other individual, a 54-year-old man, sustained severe injuries and received medical treatment. The incident took place at Galeon Playa Apartments in Costa Teguise.
An inquest unveiled that Mr. Silcox fell into the stairwell due to the railing collapse, leading to his demise. The local civil guard is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The coroner for Gwent, Rose Farmer, explained that the inquest was initiated following Mr. Silcox’s fatal fall, which resulted in a traumatic brain injury, skull fractures, and lacerations. The community was shocked by the tragic loss, as Mr. Silcox operated two stores in the area.
Reports revealed that Mr. Silcox’s wife had passed away the previous year after an illness, leaving their two children without parents. The Spanish Civil Guard is conducting an inquiry into the incident to determine if maintenance or safety lapses contributed to the tragic event.
The incident, occurring in the early hours of October 25, has raised concerns about safety standards in tourist accommodations. The surviving man was swiftly taken to a hospital for intensive care following the fall.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities focusing on the maintenance and safety protocols of the premises where the incident transpired. The inquest has been adjourned until a later date in 2026.
