“NHS Crisis: Streeting Slams Doctors’ Union for Salary Demands”

Wes Streeting has criticized the doctors’ union for expecting others to cover the costs of their increased salaries ahead of planned strike action. The Health Secretary expressed strong frustration towards the British Medical Association, likening their actions to that of a cartel. The BMA’s resident doctors are set to commence a five-day strike on Friday, coinciding with Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ contemplation of tax hikes in the upcoming budget.

Addressing attendees at the NHS Providers annual conference in Manchester, Mr. Streeting emphasized the financial challenges faced by the NHS and the need for equitable choices. He highlighted the resistance from the BMA consultants committee and pensions committee against higher taxes, implying a desire to shift the burden of funding doctors’ salaries onto others.

Accusing the BMA of jeopardizing the NHS’s future, Wes Streeting affirmed the government’s stance against yielding to the union’s demands. He asserted that the BMA’s actions were undermining the credibility of representing doctors professionally.

In response to the impending strike, Mr. Streeting and NHS England chief Sir Jim Mackey instructed hospitals to maintain essential services during the period. Sir Jim emphasized the importance of safeguarding patient safety by limiting appointment and operation rescheduling to exceptional circumstances only.

Despite urging resident doctors to reconsider their strike, Wes Streeting reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the NHS. He highlighted the significant pay increase doctors have received and reiterated the government’s stance on not further adjusting pay rates, despite the BMA’s appeal for a 26% raise to counter alleged pay erosion since 2008.

The BMA’s strike action, affecting mainly hospital-based resident doctors, is scheduled to span from 7 am on November 14 to 7 am on November 19, with a potential impact on numerous appointments. The BMA has cited salary erosion since 2008 as a key concern, emphasizing the decline in real terms salaries by various measures.

Wes Streeting pointed out the recent real-terms pay increases for doctors and emphasized the government’s efforts to ensure fair compensation. In response, a BMA spokesperson stressed the importance of valuing the NHS workforce and engaging in constructive negotiations for the benefit of doctors and patients alike.
