A man reportedly attempted to set his car on fire after driving it into a group of pedestrians and cyclists, resulting in injuries to at least 10 people, two of whom are in intensive care. The incident occurred on the French holiday island of Saint Pierre d´Oléron. The 35-year-old suspect was arrested and allegedly yelled “Allahu Akbar” at the time of his arrest. The car struck several individuals on a road between two villages on the island’s western side.
Police quickly apprehended the suspect, who had to be subdued with a Taser due to resistance during the arrest. Authorities found the suspect trying to set his car on fire shortly after the attack, leading to his swift detention at the Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron police station. The vehicle only partially caught fire, and gas canisters were discovered inside.
The arrested man, hailing from a village near the scene, was known to local officials for previous misconduct, particularly related to substance abuse. An investigation for attempted murder has been initiated by the police.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez provided initial details of the incident, mentioning the victims’ conditions and the suspect’s custody. He confirmed the launch of an investigation and his planned visit to the site.
Public prosecutor Arnaud Laraize stated that the suspect had a history of drug and alcohol use, along with psychiatric problems. While witnesses reported hearing the suspect shout “Allahu Akbar,” authorities clarified that the case is not being treated as a terrorism-related offense.
A witness described the traumatic moment when the car deliberately struck pedestrians, causing injuries. Saint Pierre d’Oléron, where the incident took place, is a renowned holiday destination, particularly popular among UK tourists. The island of Ile d’Oléron ranks as the second-largest island in France after Corsica, spanning 19 miles in length and 5 miles in width.
