“Growing Calls for Hegseth’s Resignation Over Venezuela Strike”

Calls for the resignation of Pete Hegseth, the defense secretary under Donald Trump’s administration, are growing due to an alleged unauthorized air strike on a suspected Venezuelan drug-smuggling boat. The incident occurred on September 2 when a US missile targeted the vessel, resulting in casualties onboard. Despite initial survivors, a subsequent strike was ordered, contravening the Geneva Convention, which the US is a signatory to.

Following the attack, there has been no substantiated evidence that the individuals targeted were involved in drug trafficking. Family members of the deceased claim they were fishermen and not criminals as portrayed. Criticism has come from various quarters, including within Hegseth’s own Republican party, with concerns raised about potential war crimes in targeting defenseless survivors.

Lawmakers are demanding accountability, with a classified briefing scheduled before congressional defense committees for Admiral Frank Bradley, who allegedly issued the fatal follow-up order. Questions linger on whether Hegseth should clarify his role in the matter. Hegseth, now referred to as Secretary of War by Trump, defended the second strike by citing the “fog of war,” despite the outcry over the targeting of survivors.

The controversy surrounding Hegseth extends beyond this incident, with previous allegations of breaches of protocol, personal misconduct, and misuse of organizational resources during his tenure in veteran-support organizations. Despite denying these accusations and pledging sobriety during his confirmation hearings, Hegseth faces mounting pressure amid a series of controversies during his time in the Pentagon.
