Canadian filmmaker Ally Pankiw revealed on Thursday that she declined an offer to direct an upcoming television series based on the Harry Potter franchise, citing opposition to supporting transphobia. Pankiw took to Instagram to share a text conversation where she adamantly refused to work on the HBO Harry Potter series, emphasizing her stance against funding transphobic content.
In her post, Pankiw expressed how straightforward it was for her to reject involvement in a project that she believed promoted transphobia. Clarifying that the offer was for directing and not acting, Pankiw, aged 39, highlighted her previous work, including directing episodes of Black Mirror and Feel Good, as well as the film I Used to be Funny.
Although the exchange was dated April 21, the individual Pankiw was corresponding with was not disclosed in the post. The new Harry Potter series, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on December 25, 2026, with streaming available on Crave in Canada.
