“UK Urged to Prepare for Digital Voice Network Upgrade”

The UK is on the brink of a significant milestone in its communication network evolution as the countdown to a major upgrade draws closer. With just six months left until January 2027, when the country’s traditional copper phone network will be permanently retired, households across the nation are urged to prepare for the shift to Digital Voice. This innovative service leverages broadband connections for calls, replacing the longstanding copper infrastructure that has been in place for over a century.

The impending transition is a crucial one that households cannot afford to overlook. Failure to transition to Digital Voice could result in the loss of existing landline services.

A recent awareness campaign, spearheaded by Clare Balding under the banner of ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch’, has emphasized the importance of verifying and preparing landlines for the digital era.

Clare Balding emphasized, “Responding promptly when contacted by your provider is crucial to maintaining smooth landline services. Neglecting to act could lead to disruptions in the services you depend on.”

Although the official deadline is still half a year away, the pace of the transition is accelerating. BT’s Openreach, responsible for the UK’s largest broadband network, has announced the issuance of “stop sell” notifications at an additional 112 telephone exchanges.

This action means that broadband service providers operating on the Openreach network, such as BT, Sky, Vodafone, and Plusnet, are no longer permitted to sell or migrate customers to legacy copper-based broadband and phone services in these specific areas.

In Openreach’s words, “Stop Sell is activated when the majority (75%) of premises connected to a particular exchange have access to ultrafast Full Fibre. Customers seeking to switch, upgrade, or modify their broadband or phone services must adopt a new digital service over our advanced Full Fibre network.”

With the latest implementation, the number of exchanges under the Stop Sell directive has reached 1,572, encompassing approximately 15.4 million residences and businesses across the UK.

Although the transition to full fibre and Digital Voice may seem daunting, it promises numerous advantages, including enhanced broadband speeds, more dependable connections, and a contemporary phone service better suited for today’s digital landscape.

Individuals uncertain about the impact on their homes can verify available services using the Openreach postcode checker.

James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, commented, “Our Stop Sell initiative is a crucial step in hastening the UK’s transition to a contemporary full fibre future. As copper’s capacity to support modern communications diminishes, the immediate focus is on transitioning people to newer, future-proof technologies.”

He added, “By phasing out outdated copper-based services in areas where fibre is widely available, we are facilitating the migration of customers and providers to faster, more reliable digital infrastructure. This strategy not only streamlines the maintenance of old and new networks but also supports the industry-wide transition leading up to the retirement of the
