My introduction to hockey came during the 2010 Winter Olympics, witnessing Sidney Crosby’s game-winning goal for Canada against the U.S. The nationwide celebration that followed left an indelible mark on me as a recent immigrant from the Philippines.

Watching the triumphant scenes unfold across Canada ignited my interest in the sport, prompting me to delve deeper into hockey culture as I settled into my new home.

Attending my first live hockey game in 2014, an Edmonton Oilers matchup, immersed me in the vibrant atmosphere of Rexall Place, reinforcing the significance of hockey in Edmonton.

Subsequently, I realized the profound impact of hockey on Edmonton’s community, evident through workplace dynamics and city-wide enthusiasm surrounding games like the “Battle of Alberta.”

In Canada, hockey transcends being just a sport; it embodies a cultural phenomenon, akin to a revered institution deeply ingrained in daily life, manifesting in various forms, including street names paying homage to hockey legends like Wayne Gretzky.

My growing affection for hockey paralleled my integration into Canadian society, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie with colleagues and fellow fans.

Rekindling the Passion

Relocating to Vancouver in 2016 presented new challenges, but also an opportunity to reignite my love for hockey, thanks to meeting Mike, a devoted hockey enthusiast.

Embracing our divergent backgrounds, Mike and I celebrate our shared love for hockey, with game nights becoming a cherished tradition intertwined with our relationship.
