A federal judge has mandated the public disclosure of grand jury investigation files concerning convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The transcripts from the 2005 and 2007 investigations will be released following a request by the Justice Department, prompted by recent congressional approval.
District Judge Rodney Smith confirmed that the new federal law, known as the Epstein Files Transparency Act, supersedes previous regulations prohibiting the release of grand jury materials. This legislation, signed by President Donald Trump last month, instructs the Justice Department to make all unclassified records, documents, and communications on Epstein available to the public within 30 days.
Despite Trump’s prior resistance, the bill passed with strong support in Congress. Trump had previously dismissed calls for document disclosure as a “Democrat hoax.” Notably, the released files do not contain information presented to grand juries considering indictments against Epstein or his associate Ghislaine Maxwell.
Epstein, who was found dead in his jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking, has been linked to prominent figures worldwide. Recently, the House Oversight Committee released numerous emails and documents from Epstein’s estate revealing his connections to influential individuals, including Trump.
It is important to note that being mentioned in the files does not imply criminal involvement. Trump, who has denied any wrongdoing in connection to Epstein, stated that he distanced himself from the financier years ago but faced pressure for transparency for several months.
