A tight-knit community is grieving the loss of a young boy who tragically passed away after a collision involving an e-bike as he was heading home from school. The incident occurred on a bike path near the Kawana Way and Sunshine Motorway interchange at Mountain Creek. The eight-year-old, identified as Zeke Hondow, collided with a 15-year-old boy also riding an e-bike. Both boys were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
Zeke was swiftly transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in critical condition, but unfortunately, despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away. The Queensland Police reported that the Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the incident, which took place on October 30. The younger boy did not survive the crash, while the older boy, who declined medical treatment, is cooperating with law enforcement.
Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg emphasized the need for increased attention to e-bike safety following this tragedy, expressing condolences to Zeke’s family and friends. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Zeke’s family during this difficult time, raising over $6,000 so far. Donations can be made to the fund to assist the family with financial challenges.
The incident has prompted calls for greater government action to address e-bike-related concerns, with authorities urging any witnesses or individuals with relevant footage to come forward to aid in the investigation.
