The edited clip was featured in a 2024 Panorama episode, with the BBC acknowledging it as an “error in judgement.” A BBC representative stated that the altered content would not be aired again in its current form across any BBC platforms.
In response to a letter received from President Trump’s legal team, the BBC’s attorneys corresponded with them, while BBC Chair Samir Shah personally wrote a letter to the White House expressing regret over the editing of the President’s speech in the program. The BBC clarified that they have no intentions of re-broadcasting the documentary ‘Trump: A Second Chance?’ on any BBC platforms. Despite expressing regret over the editing, the BBC firmly stated their disagreement with the notion of a defamation claim.
President Trump had threatened a billion-dollar lawsuit in response to the altered clip, but BBC leaders opted not to engage in a public dispute with the former President. Trump, speaking to Fox News about the legal threat, emphasized his obligation to pursue legal action, citing the dishonest editing of the clip. Although Trump criticized the editing, legal experts cast doubt on his prospects of winning a defamation case, particularly as the Panorama episode was not accessible in Florida where the legal action was initiated.
