A grieving family is seeking explanations regarding the death of their son, who passed away 25 years after receiving intensive treatment that ultimately led to his demise.
Collin Junior Lou Macari Stoke City Price, named after his father’s passion for the football club, succumbed to the effects of the treatment at the age of 27. His medical journey began at the age of two when doctors diagnosed him with a malignant brain tumor called medulloblastoma, following symptoms of developmental delays, seizures, and lethargy.
Despite undergoing surgery and radiation therapy, Collin developed a glioblastoma, a type of brain tumor associated with the radiation treatment, more than two decades later. Tragically, this second tumor proved fatal, and Collin passed away on June 22 at Douglas Macmillan Hospice.
The family contends that Collin’s annual CT scans, conducted to monitor for tumor recurrence, exposed him to unnecessary radiation, potentially contributing to the development of the second tumor. They believe that earlier detection could have prolonged Collin’s life and improved his quality of life.
Medical experts confirmed that the second tumor likely resulted from the childhood radiation treatment that initially cured Collin’s medulloblastoma. While acknowledging the risks associated with CT scans, they noted that spotting the glioblastoma earlier may not have altered the outcome due to its aggressive nature.
The coroner, Andrew Barkley, concluded that Collin’s death was a rare but acknowledged complication of essential medical intervention. Despite the tragic outcome, Collin’s mother fondly remembers him as a joyful and helpful individual who brought light and laughter to those around him, emphasizing his positive impact despite his medical challenges.
