Christmas, a time typically associated with joy and festivity for many families, has forever turned tragic for Kevin Bacon’s loved ones. The 25-year-old went missing on Christmas Day after failing to return home for a family breakfast. Concern grew as Kevin, a standout student and skilled hairdresser, was last known to have met a man from Grindr the night before.
Following this lead, investigators arrived at Mark Latunski’s residence, uncovering a gruesome sight. Kevin had been brutally murdered, his naked body suspended upside down from the ceiling in a concealed room. Shockingly, this wasn’t the only horrific revelation inside the house.
Latunski confessed to authorities that he had fatally stabbed Kevin, slit his throat, and hanged him with a rope from the rafters. Additionally, he admitted to mutilating Kevin’s body, including consuming a part of his genitalia, as indicated in court records. Kevin’s father, Karl Bacon, expressed deep distress over the disturbing details, acknowledging the pain and disbelief felt by the family.
The encounter with Latunski wasn’t new to law enforcement, who had been monitoring him for months prior to the 2019 tragedy. Reports from The Washington Post revealed that Latunski’s previous Grindr encounters had ended abruptly, with individuals fleeing his residence during what was described as “basement bondage sessions.”
In one instance, a man escaped and alerted authorities about being restrained with leather ankle straps and a chain. Another individual fled wearing only a leather kilt, with Latunski in pursuit, claiming he wanted his clothing back. Despite these encounters, no legal action was taken against Latunski, as the men considered their interactions consensual but unsettling.
Latunski pleaded guilty to murder and body mutilation in September 2022, shortly before his scheduled trial. Despite advice from his legal team, he admitted to the crimes almost three years after Kevin’s tragic death in Shiawassee County.
Before Latunski’s sentencing in December 2022, a heartrending statement from Kevin’s mother, Pamela, was read in court. She expressed profound grief over losing her son in such a horrific manner, emphasizing the irreplaceable void left in their lives. The statement conveyed a sense of ongoing sorrow and the family’s struggle to find closure despite the legal proceedings.
A judge in Shiawassee County sentenced Latunski, then 53, to life imprisonment without parole for first-degree murder. He also received an 11-month concurrent sentence for disinterring and mutilating a deceased body. The family’s plea for justice and closure amid unimaginable loss remains a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of this tragic event.
