WhatsApp is addressing a key concern by introducing a new feature, prompting users to take action promptly. Currently, users must exchange phone numbers to chat on the platform, which is not always convenient. After a long wait, the Meta-owned app is rolling out unique usernames, allowing users to share this identifier instead of their phone number.
The move aims to address privacy concerns when connecting with new people like classmates, neighbors, or event contacts. WhatsApp emphasized the need for chatting without revealing personal phone numbers. This update will also enhance privacy in group conversations, enabling users to engage in community or social group chats without immediately disclosing their phone numbers.
Users can now secure their preferred usernames before the full launch, as the platform hosts billions of users, leading to quick username claims. By reserving early, users increase their chances of securing their desired username. To reserve a username, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username.
The feature will be gradually rolled out in the coming months, with WhatsApp notifying users when usernames are available in their region.
