Cadbury has recently reduced the size of its Mini Eggs bags from 80g to 74g, while keeping the price unchanged. This practice, known as shrinkflation, involves decreasing product size while maintaining the price point. Prices for Cadbury Mini Eggs vary across different retailers. For instance, they are priced at £2.36 on the Cadbury website, £2 at Morrisons, and £1.74 at Asda. Consumers have expressed dissatisfaction with the change, with one individual taking to social media to voice their concerns.
Mondelez International, the owner of Cadbury, explained that the reduction in bag size was a response to rising production costs. The company cited increased expenses for ingredients like cocoa and dairy, as well as high energy and transport costs as contributing factors. Despite absorbing some of these costs, Mondelez stated that maintaining product quality and taste led to the decision to slightly reduce the weight of the Mini Eggs bags.
The Mirror reached out to Mondelez for further comment on the matter. This move follows a similar trend seen with Quality Street, which reduced its weight from 600g to 550g during the holiday season. Food policy expert Gavin Wren highlighted Nestle’s product reductions as well, questioning the ongoing trend of shrinking product sizes. In response, Nestle stated that product ranges and prices are determined by various factors including manufacturing costs, ingredient prices, and consumer preferences.
