A 34-year-old man, who had recently lost his job as a customer service representative, took on a temporary position as a seasonal worker at a supermarket with the hope of earning money to cover his expenses and save for his education. Tragically, while working at Walmart in Green Acres Mall, Valley Stream, New York, on Black Friday in 2008, the man, Jdimytai Damour, was fatally trampled by a crowd of over 2,000 shoppers who stormed into the store at 5am. The chaotic scene resulted in Damour being knocked down and ultimately crushed to death by the frenzied shoppers.
Damour, a graduate of Freeport High School known for his passion for reading and poetry, aspired to become a teacher. His father described him as a “good boy” with a bright future. The incident also left several other employees injured, with one pregnant woman among the casualties. Damour was rushed to the hospital after the stampede but was pronounced dead at 6:03 am. An autopsy later confirmed that he died due to asphyxiation from the pressure on his chest caused by the relentless shoppers.
Following the tragic event, it was revealed that Walmart had insufficient security measures in place to handle the large crowd on Black Friday. The supermarket released a statement expressing their efforts to manage the situation but acknowledged the unfortunate outcome. The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500 called for an investigation into Damour’s death, criticizing the lack of safety precautions and management oversights that led to the fatal incident. The union president emphasized that the tragedy could have been prevented with better safety protocols and crowd control measures.
