Tributes are flooding in following the unexpected passing of a beloved French teacher and rugby enthusiast from Stockport.
Jonathan Gander, aged 45, sadly passed away on Tuesday due to a suspected heart attack. Werneth School, in a Facebook post, expressed, “Mr Gardner was known for his kind and gentle nature, teaching with immense passion. His kindness, positivity, and ability to bring smiles to our faces are qualities that set him apart. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family. As one of our Year 8 students beautifully put it this week; Merci d’etre un professeur formidable et gentil.”
Colleagues and parents honored the cherished teacher in their comments, with one individual stating, “Sending best wishes to his family, may he rest in peace. He was a cheerful and familiar presence in the hallways, one that will not be forgotten.”
The school has received numerous messages, with plans to compile them into a student book of condolences for the family, as reported by Manchester Evening News. A minute of silence was observed at the Year 11 football match, and many Year 11 students signed a handmade card for his family.
Ms. Chantler, the acting headteacher at Werneth School, shared on the school’s website, “We mourn the loss of a beloved teacher, colleague, and friend. Jonathan Gander was a remarkable individual; he dedicated his time outside of school as a rugby coach and scout leader, supporting various causes and individuals. We will deeply miss him.”
“I wish to pay tribute to an exceptional man. He was kind-hearted, a gentle giant, and a man of integrity. The loss of Jonathan Gander will be felt by our staff and students for a long time, and I want to express my gratitude to all of them publicly. Our staff have handled this situation with utmost professionalism during these challenging times, and our students have shown nothing but respect and kindness.”
Mr. Gander was also a valued member of Didsbury Old Bedians RUFC, where he actively participated in all aspects of the club for nearly a decade.
A tribute on the club’s website by Ben Rogerson stated, “He immediately found a sense of belonging and made friends wherever he went. Jon meant the world to us all, and we understood how much Bedians meant to him.”
Mr. Gardner played for various teams within the club, coached different junior sections, and was known for always volunteering for any task at the club, whether it was maintaining the pitches, assisting at the bar, or cleaning the changing rooms.
The club has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist his family with funeral and legal expenses.
