A recent study unveiled the top family disputes during car journeys, such as children’s meltdowns over snacks and disagreements about seating arrangements. The survey, which involved 2,000 drivers with kids under 17, revealed that 69% have clashed with their children while on the road. The most common trigger for arguments was hunger, cited by 34% of respondents, surpassing the classic “are we there yet?” scenario at 26%.
Parents reportedly get irritated after their kids ask the infamous question just three times. Additionally, 14% of families have quarreled due to poor phone or internet connectivity during trips, leading to 55% feeling hesitant about embarking on road adventures. Surprisingly, 47% find long drives with children more stressful than traveling abroad with them.
With October half-term approaching, 64% of parents are gearing up for extended car journeys. Steve Catlin, the managing director of Vauxhall, emphasized the importance of proper snacks, space, and a well-curated road trip playlist to ensure a pleasant family bonding experience on the road.
Challenges like kids becoming bored (50%), sibling squabbles (37%), and keeping them entertained (35%) were highlighted as major hurdles during long drives. To tackle these issues, 71% of families pack snacks and drinks in advance, while 22% opt to travel during nap times. A majority (52%) believe that ample space in the back seat would significantly improve the journey, while 45% value music streaming via Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
The study, conducted by Market research and PR surveys – OnePoll: Inspiring Human Insights, discovered that 52% of parents have threatened to turn the car around due to misbehavior, with 34% actually following through. Comfort was identified as the top priority for 74% of families when selecting a new car, although safety remains a critical factor for 57%.
Vauxhall’s spokesperson emphasized the importance of a family-friendly vehicle for a smoother journey, highlighting features like a spacious interior, connectivity technology, and the Intelli-Seat for enhanced comfort during long rides.
