Snooker Icon John Virgo’s Sudden Passing Shocks Sports World

The unexpected passing of snooker icon John Virgo has reverberated across the sports world today. His widow, Rosie Ries, spoke exclusively to The Mirror, paying tribute to her late husband known as ‘Mr Perfection.’

In 1979, John reached the semi-finals of the World Championship and clinched the UK Championship title by defeating Terry Griffiths 14-13, despite a late arrival for the final session resulting in a deduction of two frames. Renowned for his larger-than-life persona, he charmed audiences as the co-host of the 1990s game show Big Break alongside Jim Davidson, famously uttering the catchphrase: “Where’s the cue ball going?” Additionally, he excelled as a commentator, covering snooker events for the BBC.

Reflecting on her loss, Rosie shared, “We were almost at our 16th wedding anniversary. Life without John is unimaginable; he was my love and best companion.” John’s close friend James Malyon, present with Rosie, confirmed that the cause of death was a sudden rupture of the aorta, catching everyone off guard.

Describing John as a great man and the heart of gatherings, James reminisced about their shared love for golf and socializing. Friends and family are organizing multiple commemorations of John’s life, with the first event scheduled for the following week in Mijas Costa, Spain.

John, who relocated to Spain from Surrey in 2020, led a colorful life akin to his distinctive waistcoats. From his humble beginnings in post-war Salford, he inherited his father’s passion for horse racing and honed his skills in local snooker clubs during his youth. After turning professional in 1976 and retiring in 1994, he was later inducted into the World Snooker Tour hall of fame.

Achieving widespread fame and prosperity through the snooker-themed show Big Break, which aired from 1991 to 2002, John ventured into various endeavors, including a line of waistcoats, pantomime roles, book publications, and a trick shot app. Fondly remembered by fellow snooker legend Ken Doherty, John’s profound impact on the sport and his infectious storytelling abilities left an indelible mark.

In his autobiography “Say Goodnight JV” published in 2017, John candidly discussed his battle with severe gambling addiction that nearly derailed his life and career. Just before his passing, he participated in several sold-out shows on the Black Ball 40th Anniversary Tour, including a reenactment of the iconic 1985 World Snooker Final between Steve Davis and Dennis Taylor.

Dennis Taylor, deeply affected by John’s demise, highlighted their enduring friendship spanning over five decades and the invaluable memories shared together. Reflecting on John’s legacy as a pioneer of humor in snooker commentary, Dennis emphasized the void left by his passing and the profound impact he had on those around him.

The snooker community, including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Jimmy White, and Jim Davidson, expressed their heartfelt condolences, acknowledging John’s exceptional talent and warmth. Jason Ferguson, chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, lauded John’s contributions to the sport and his enduring legacy as a beloved player and entertainer.

Rob Walker, a snooker MC and commentator, lauded John’s enduring talent and charisma, recalling their recent collaboration on the Masters Live broadcast. Walker marveled at John’s unwavering prowess and expressed deep shock over his sudden departure, marking the end of an illustrious era in snooker.

The news of John’s passing has left a profound impact on the snooker community, with tributes pouring in from across the globe. As fans and colleagues mourn his loss, John Virgo’s legacy as a charismatic figure and iconic snooker personality will be cherished for years to come.
