“Fraudster Dies by Acid Ingestion in Court Tragedy”

A fraudster tragically chose to ingest acid while in court upon learning he was facing imprisonment. Mark Marshall, also known as Mark Castley and using various aliases, previously impersonated an ex-MI6 agent to scam Adam Johnson’s family out of £170,000.

Marshall passed away after sneaking a corrosive substance past security into Inner London Crown Court during his sentencing for a new fraud offense in April 2019. Evidence suggests he concealed the substance in his shoe and mixed it into a water bottle during a court break. The ingestion led to organ failure and ultimately his death two months later.

At the inquest, Marshall’s wife, Theresa Mulberry, revealed that the 55-year-old, diagnosed with a personality disorder, had a history of suicide attempts while incarcerated. Despite being from a privileged background and excelling in sports, Marshall’s life revolved around repeated criminal activities for financial gain.

The inquest also highlighted Marshall’s previous acts of deception, including posing as an intelligence operative to aid the disgraced footballer Johnson and defrauding others through various schemes. Marshall’s final act of self-harm was triggered by the prospect of a 2-year, 4-month prison sentence for fraudulent activities involving fake checks and stolen photography equipment.
