A heating expert from British Gas has shared tips on resolving cold spots in radiators, with a budget-friendly solution costing only 97p. If your radiator displays cold spots, especially at the top, or emits gurgling sounds while heating slowly, it likely needs bleeding, a straightforward task requiring the right tools.
To address this issue, you will require a radiator key, available for as low as 97p at Screwfix. Bleeding a radiator involves releasing trapped air to enhance efficiency. Prior to commencing the process, it is crucial to turn off the heating system and ensure the radiator has cooled down completely to prevent accidental scalding from hot water.
Prepare an old towel and container to catch the water that will be released during bleeding. Locate the small valve on the radiator and rotate it anti-clockwise using the key. As advised by Peter Knowles, a technical repair engineer at British Gas, open the valve slightly until a hissing sound is heard, indicating air escaping. Once water starts flowing, collect it in the container, tighten the valve, and repeat the process on other radiators if necessary.
Avoid over-tightening the valve to prevent excessive boiler pressure reduction. In case issues persist after bleeding, seek assistance from a qualified gas safe registered engineer as there might be underlying complexities. Meanwhile, another British Gas energy expert, Jessica Rawstron, suggests maximizing residual oven heat by leaving the door ajar post-cooking to warm the kitchen gradually.
Recent increases in energy bills have impacted households, with the average direct debit payment now standing at around £1,758 annually for gas and electricity. While the price cap limits unit rates and standing charges, total expenses are influenced by consumption levels. Customers on non-fixed energy tariffs fall under the price cap regulation, with pre-payment meter users facing a yearly charge of £1,711 and bill payment recipients paying £1,894 annually.
