President Donald Trump has introduced a new ‘gold card’ program that offers legal status and a path to U.S. citizenship for individuals willing to invest $1 million. The initiative was launched on December 10 through a dedicated website as Trump gathered with business leaders at the White House.
Trump announced the program on Truth Social just before its launch, stating that it provides a direct route to citizenship for qualified individuals. The program aims to replace the EB-5 visas, which were established in 1990 to attract foreign investment by requiring a $1 million investment in a company employing at least 10 people.
Individuals can apply for Trump’s visa by investing the full amount, while corporations must contribute double the amount for each foreign-born employee. Trump envisions this program as a way to attract top talent to the U.S. while also generating revenue for the government.
All funds generated from the program will be directed to the U.S. government, with Trump anticipating billions flowing into the Treasury Department for the country’s benefit. The new program essentially offers a green card, providing permanent residency and a path to citizenship, which Trump described as a more robust and effective option.
Notably, the program does not impose specific job creation requirements on applying corporations or set overall caps, unlike the current EB-5 program. Trump highlighted challenges faced by businesses in recruiting talented graduates from U.S. universities due to immigration restrictions, emphasizing the need for a system that enables companies to retain skilled workers.
