“US Trade Envoy Warns Canada of Consequences Amid Tariff Threat”

The U.S. administration, led by Donald Trump’s trade envoy, emphasized its stance against potential retaliation from Canada in response to the latest tariff threat. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated in Des Moines, Iowa, that the intention behind the tariffs was to safeguard domestic supply chains on a global scale, not specifically targeting Canada. Greer made it clear that if any country retaliated against the U.S., it would face consequences.

Trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. have intensified following Trump’s warning of imposing a substantial 50 percent tariff on numerous Canadian products effective from August 19. Greer highlighted the ongoing constructive talks with Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc, indicating a willingness from the Canadian side for a more conciliatory approach.

Industry insiders familiar with the negotiations revealed that Canada views the approaching August 19 deadline as critical, signaling a potential halt in talks if the tariffs are implemented. Greer reiterated the administration’s commitment to prioritize American interests in trade policies, while expressing openness to aligning with Canada if mutually beneficial. The U.S. is also considering various options for the upcoming deadline, including addressing existing tariffs on key sectors like automotive and steel industries.

Despite the U.S. citing concerns such as provincial alcohol bans, dairy quotas, and auto tariffs, sources suggest Canada is prepared to make concessions in these areas. However, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about an imminent deal, cautioning against compromising on dairy negotiations. Greer underscored that the trade issues between the U.S. and Canada extend beyond a few specific matters, pointing out the contentious issues surrounding alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs.

Former Canadian ambassador to the U.S., Frank McKenna, challenged Greer’s assertions, defending Canada’s retaliatory actions as a response to what he deemed unfair and unlawful U.S. measures. McKenna criticized the perceived unilateral approach of the U.S. and emphasized the importance of countries defending themselves against unjust practices.
