“Rising Food Prices Spark Consumer Shift to Supermarket Own Brands”

Food prices have been steadily increasing due to the ongoing cost of living crisis. This trend is evident as consumers walk into supermarkets and notice the rising prices of their favorite products. Many individuals are opting for supermarket own-brand items to save money, shifting away from well-known brands. However, this cost-saving strategy may not always prove effective, as observed during a recent visit to Marks & Spencer.

While Marks & Spencer is known for its premium offerings, it typically offers everyday products at reasonable prices. For instance, the Classic Mayonnaise from M&S costs £1.50 for a 500ml tub, only slightly higher than similar products from Sainsbury’s and Tesco. However, the introduction of the new Only… Ingredients range at M&S unveiled a significant price difference.

The Olive Oil Mayonnaise from the Only… Ingredients range stood out with a price tag of £4.50 for a 250g tub, compared to the £1.50 for the Classic Mayonnaise. Despite containing only six ingredients, including olive oil, egg yolks, dried mustard, white wine vinegar, sea salt, and water, the product’s price was notably steep.

The steep cost of olive oil in the UK market has been a growing concern, leading to increased prices of products containing this ingredient. Factors contributing to this price surge include reduced global supply due to poor harvests, a supply and demand imbalance, higher import costs, currency effects, and retail pricing strategies based on quality tiers.

Despite the higher pricing of the Olive Oil Mayonnaise, other products in the Only… Ingredients range at M&S remain relatively affordable compared to their counterparts. While the initiative to focus on simpler ingredients is commendable, consumers are wary of overpaying for basic products. The disparity in prices within the range highlights the need for balancing quality and affordability in food products.

Looking ahead, consumers may need to adjust to higher prices for olive oil-based products, influenced by global market dynamics and import challenges. While the Olive Oil Mayonnaise serves as an outlier in the range, it prompts reflection on the evolving landscape of food pricing and consumer preferences.
