I extend warm New Year wishes to all Mirror readers. Regardless of how you celebrate, I hope it brings joy and fulfillment.
The year 2025 was marked by notable achievements, including the Lionesses’ impressive Euros triumph, the Red Roses’ victory at the women’s Rugby World Cup, and Scotland’s remarkable World Cup qualification. However, for many individuals, it remained a challenging period. Recognizing the hard work of Mirror readers, I understand the desire for simple luxuries like dining out, going on holiday, or acquiring a new phone.
As we enter 2026, I assure you that the promised changes will manifest. Expect improvements in your utility bills, local communities, and public services. More police presence, closure of asylum hotels, and the establishment of new health centers in your vicinity are on the horizon. Investment in community amenities such as parks, piers, and youth clubs will enhance your town’s pride. Additionally, advancements in workplace rights and housing rights for renters are forthcoming, with a significant reduction in child poverty anticipated.
Recently, a poignant letter from a nine-year-old Scottish girl highlighted the harsh realities of child poverty, from hunger and cold to the challenges faced by working families struggling to make ends meet. In response, measures will be implemented to lift over half a million children out of poverty, including the elimination of the two-child limit on child benefit and expanding free school meal programs.
Ensuring financial stability is crucial in supporting individuals amidst the rising cost of living. By freezing rail fares, prescription charges, and fuel duty, reducing energy bills, and enhancing childcare affordability for working families, we aim to alleviate financial burdens. Moreover, a substantial increase in the national minimum wage will benefit essential workers like shop assistants, cleaners, and caregivers.
The journey to revitalize our nation is ongoing, but progress is evident. Each positive change signals a reversal of decline, a restoration of opportunity and pride, and a brighter future for families. Amidst political challenges, the concept of hope has been overshadowed, but in 2026, we aim to reignite hope, showcasing the resilience and potential of the real Britain as we move forward with optimism.
Signed,
Prime Minister
