Electronic Pop Icon Dave Ball of Soft Cell Dies at 66

Dave Ball, the talented musician known for his work in the popular electronic pop duo Soft Cell, has passed away at the age of 66. The band confirmed the sad news in a heartfelt tribute.

The electronic artist peacefully passed away in his sleep at his residence in London on Wednesday. This tragic event occurred shortly after he and his bandmate Marc Almond finished what is now considered the final album by Soft Cell. Marc, who collaborated with Dave on hits like Tainted Love and Say Hello, Wave Goodbye, expressed his condolences.

In a statement, Marc, 68, shared, “It is difficult to articulate this loss, especially considering Dave’s positive state of mind. He was enthusiastic and delighted with the new album we just completed a few days ago.”

Marc continued, “The year 2026 was supposed to be a joyful time for him, and it brings some comfort to know that he listened to the finished record and found it to be exceptional. Dave’s musical talent has never been more evident.”

Reflecting on their longstanding partnership, Marc added, “Dave and I have shared nearly five decades of musical journey. Despite our initial challenges as young, determined art students, our differences somehow complemented each other perfectly.”

Marc fondly remembered their bond, stating, “Each time we reunited after a hiatus, that warmth and chemistry remained. Our mutual respect fueled our songwriting prowess.”

Describing Dave’s impact, Marc mentioned, “He was the driving force behind Soft Cell, and I am immensely proud of what we created together.”

The duo’s final live performance took place just before Dave’s passing at the Rewind Festival in Henley-on-Thames. Soft Cell was formed by Dave and Marc after meeting at Leeds Polytechnic in 1979, establishing a musical legacy with hits like Tainted Love and Torch.

Their iconic track Tainted Love topped charts in the UK and 17 other countries, influencing a wave of synth-pop duos. Dave, in addition to his contributions to Soft Cell, released a solo album titled In Strict Tempo and collaborated with renowned artists like Kylie Minogue and David Bowie.

Soft Cell underwent several hiatuses but reunited for various projects over the years, including their final album, Danceteria, set to be released in Spring 2026. Apart from his work with Soft Cell, Dave was also part of The Grid, achieving success with hits like Swamp Thing.

Richard Norris, Dave’s partner in The Grid, paid tribute, emphasizing their strong musical bond. He expressed gratitude for the shared experiences and Dave’s lasting influence on his life and music.

Dave Ball’s legacy in the music industry, particularly with Soft Cell, continues to resonate with fans worldwide, ensuring his memory lives on through his timeless music.
