Cricket legend Robin Smith dies at 62

England cricket icon Robin Smith has passed away at the age of 62. The former batsman, renowned for his performances in 62 Test matches for England, died in Australia while on a trip for the Ashes series.

The sad news was shared by Smith’s close friend and ex-teammate from Hampshire, Kevan James, during an emotional conversation on BBC Radio Solent. Smith had been candid about his struggles with alcoholism and depression, although the exact cause of his death remains unknown.

Known as ‘The Judge’, Smith, a skilled right-handed batsman, made his Test debut against the West Indies in 1988 despite being born in South Africa. He achieved notable milestones in his career, including scoring two centuries in the Ashes series shortly after his debut.

One of Smith’s remarkable performances was his highest Test score of 175 in response to Brian Lara’s record-breaking innings of 375 in Antigua. Throughout his Test career, he amassed 4,236 runs at an impressive average of 43.67, with nine centuries to his name.

Apart from his Test achievements, Smith also represented England in 71 one-day internationals and played a crucial role in the team’s journey to the World Cup final in 1992. His unbeaten 167 against Australia in 1993 stood as the highest ODI score by an English player until 2016.

Despite retiring from international cricket in 1996, Smith continued to play for Hampshire until 2003, enjoying a 21-season stint with the club and earning a reputation as one of their finest players.

However, Smith faced personal battles post-retirement, grappling with alcoholism and depression. He had been hospitalized for extended periods, with doctors expressing concerns about his survival, especially after the recent loss of his father.

In a recent interview with The Times, Smith opened up about his ongoing struggles with alcohol and mental health issues, acknowledging the challenges he faced in maintaining sobriety. He emphasized the importance of seeking support and not hesitating to reach out to friends during difficult times.

Robin Smith’s passing has deeply saddened the cricket community, as tributes pour in for the legendary player who will be remembered for his talent and resilience both on and off the field.
