A man has been sentenced to five years in prison for causing the death of an 85-year-old grandfather by dangerous driving. Qabir Hussain, 54, was found guilty after his van struck David Brooke while he was crossing a road in Wakefield. Hussain had been using his mobile phone just moments before the fatal crash, according to West Yorkshire Police.
The granddaughter of the victim expressed profound grief over the loss of her beloved grandfather, describing him as a kind and loving man whose absence has deeply affected the family. She shared in a statement the lasting impact of losing such a cherished family member.
Following the incident, an investigation revealed that Hussain’s phone was unlocked and in use while he was driving, accessing emails and a web browser. Detective Sergeant Nina Roper emphasized the tragic consequences of distracted driving, highlighting the dangers of losing focus while behind the wheel.
DS Roper stressed the seriousness of distracted driving, particularly using a phone while operating a vehicle, which is classified as one of the “Fatal Five” contributing factors to serious and fatal accidents. She urged drivers to prioritize safety and to pull over in a safe location if they need to use their phones, emphasizing the importance of avoiding distractions to prevent tragic outcomes like the one involving David Brooke.
In addition to using a mobile phone while driving, the “Fatal Five” offenses identified by the police include speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, not wearing a seatbelt, and careless driving.
