During the latest episode of Question Time, Fiona Bruce took on a Conservative MP who made a bold accusation against the BBC. Graham Stuart, the MP for Beverley and Holderness, faced criticism on social media after implying that the BBC was biased in favor of Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, amid a controversy over her rental license. Bruce promptly intervened, cautioning Stuart against misrepresenting her words.
Bruce’s response garnered applause from the audience in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, as she delivered a stern rebuke to Stuart, momentarily silencing the room. Viewers at home also expressed their displeasure, with one labeling Stuart as “rude and arrogant” and another describing his comment as a “tasteless slur.”
Stuart, who serves as the energy secretary under Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, diverted a discussion on prisons to target Reeves, prompting Bruce to steer the conversation back on track. However, Stuart’s remarks about the BBC led to a clarification from Bruce, emphasizing that she was quoting an estate agent’s words and not expressing her own opinions.
Bruce highlighted that the estate agent involved in Reeves’ case accepted responsibility for any errors. Despite recent allegations, the Prime Minister confirmed that Reeves would not face further action. Stuart persisted with his argument, questioning the fairness in holding individuals accountable for their actions based on their status or affiliation.
Bruce reiterated that she was quoting the estate agent’s statement and redirected the focus to the original topic of discussion, which centered on issues within the prison system, specifically the accidental release of two inmates from HMP Wandsworth.
