Keir Starmer has strongly criticized Reform UK following allegations of using divisive tactics during a heated exchange at the latest PMQs session. The Prime Minister called on Reform UK’s chief whip, Lee Anderson, to seek an explanation from their leader, Nigel Farage, regarding recent newspaper reports. These reports claim that Farage made racially insensitive and antisemitic remarks in his youth, allegations he denies.
During the confrontation in Parliament, Mr. Starmer humorously remarked on Mr. Anderson’s unexpected talent for comedy. The exchange ensued as Anderson accused the Labour frontbench of engaging in divisive politics while highlighting Reform UK’s focus on their responsibilities.
Mr. Starmer responded by pointing out recent incidents involving Farage’s failure to condemn racist remarks made by other members of Reform UK, including derogatory comments about children in care. This rebuke follows Starmer’s previous criticism, labeling the Reform chief as “utterly spineless” for not condemning such behavior.
In a previous PMQs session, Mr. Farage faced condemnation after failing to address appalling comments made within his party. The controversy arose when a Labour MP raised concerns over derogatory remarks by a Reform UK member, currently under investigation for breaching the code of conduct.
Despite an opportunity to denounce the offensive comments, Mr. Farage opted to discuss asylum hotels instead of directly addressing the issue at hand. Starmer called out Farage for neglecting to take action against party members making inappropriate statements, including MP Sarah Pochin’s divisive remarks.
Following Pochin’s controversial comments, Farage expressed discontent but defended her intentions as non-racist. The recent PMQs saw Anderson challenging the PM to ensure forthcoming council elections proceed as scheduled, taunting Starmer to demonstrate leadership.
