Israeli authorities have returned the bodies of 30 Palestinians after Hamas militants in Gaza handed over the remains of two hostages. The bodies were received by Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, with details on their condition and identities yet to be disclosed.
This exchange of Palestinian remains for hostages signifies progress in the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement, despite recent Israeli airstrikes in Gaza resulting in over 100 Palestinian casualties, predominantly civilians. The airstrikes were in retaliation for the killing of an Israel Defense Force soldier by a sniper and allegations of Hamas returning body parts of a previously retrieved hostage.
The returned bodies’ origins remain uncertain, whether they perished in the October 7 attack in Israel, died as detainees in Israeli custody, or were recovered from Gaza during the conflict. Gaza health officials face challenges in identifying the bodies without access to DNA kits.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed the returned remains as those of hostages Sahar Baruch and Amiram Cooper, taken during the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack. This confirmation followed overnight strikes in southern Gaza, with 40 reported injuries and the ceasefire reinstated by Israel.
Hamas has returned the remains of 17 hostages since the ceasefire began, with more expected to be handed over. Baruch, an aspiring electrical engineering student, was killed during captivity, while Cooper, an economist from Kibbutz Nir Oz, was confirmed deceased in Gaza. The remaining Hamas fighters in the designated zone were given a deadline to evacuate, or Israeli strikes would ensue.
The ceasefire, initiated on October 10, aims to de-escalate the deadliest and most destructive conflict between Israel and Hamas, triggered by the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel. Subsequent military actions by Israel have resulted in a significant number of Palestinian casualties, disputed by Israel and Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry records.
