A tragic incident unfolded as an elderly woman passed away alone on a secluded island after being inadvertently left behind by a cruise ship. Suzanne Rees, 80, was part of a Coral Expeditions cruise scheduled to explore the scenic wonders of Australia. On October 25, passengers disembarked at Lizard Island, known for its stunning coral reefs and pristine beaches. While participating in a group hike on the Cook’s Look trail, Suzanne fell ill and was left unattended on the mountain as the cruise ship departed for its next destination.
The ship reportedly failed to conduct a passenger count before leaving, leading to Suzanne being abandoned. Her daughter Katherine expressed shock and sadness over the lack of care shown towards her mother. Suzanne was only reported missing when she failed to show up for dinner hours after she went missing. Yachtie Traci Ayris, who was nearby, mentioned that the ship did not perform a headcount of all guests on the island before departing swiftly.
Search efforts were initiated after Suzanne’s disappearance was reported, and her lifeless body was found the following day near the hiking trail. Eyewitnesses recounted the somber search operation that took place, expressing sorrow over the tragic turn of events. Queensland Police classified the death as sudden and non-suspicious, launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Coral Expeditions CEO Mark Fifield extended condolences to the Rees family and assured full cooperation with the ongoing investigations. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority is also looking into the matter. The incident has sparked a multi-agency investigation to determine how Suzanne, described as an avid bushwalker and gardener, was left behind by the cruise ship.
