A highly anticipated Halloween event dubbed as the “most awaited” in the country, known for its terrifying scare mazes, came to an unexpected halt midway. The immersive “Haunt Fest” event, held at the Hertfordshire County Showground, intended to run from October 17 to November 1, was suddenly canceled.
The cancellation left many staff members in a challenging situation, with some facing financial losses. Phoebe Shergold-Willis, who played the role of a zombie-like character named Ethel, expressed her dismay as she revealed being owed approximately £1,600 for her involvement in the event. She highlighted that none of the actors, who were on £85 per day rates, had received their payments as per the agreed terms.
In a statement released by In the Scenes Ltd CEO Nick Doherty, the company announced its voluntary insolvency, leading to the cessation of operations for Halloween Haunt Fest. Despite efforts to overcome financial obstacles, sustaining the event became unfeasible.
The abrupt closure not only impacted the staff but also affected other businesses involved in the event. Emma Rule from Sentry and K9, a security provider for the event, expressed the significant impact on their operations, mentioning the financial strain caused by the situation.
Furthermore, the Hertfordshire Agricultural Society clarified that they had no direct involvement in the event or the company behind it. They disclosed being owed a substantial amount for the rental of the showground, echoing the frustration shared by unpaid actors, employees, and contractors.
As the aftermath of the cancellation unfolds, the affected parties await communication from the appointed insolvency practitioner. The community expresses disappointment and concern over the financial fallout of the event’s sudden closure.
