An Atlanta mother is facing serious charges after allegedly fatally stabbing her 11-year-old daughter before attempting suicide. Shannen Grimes, 42, is accused of murder, felony murder, cruelty to children, tampering with evidence, and weapon possession during a felony in connection to the tragic incident that occurred on November 14 in Sandy Springs, Georgia.
Sandy Springs Police Sgt. Leon Millholland expressed sympathy for the family, community, and law enforcement officers involved in the distressing situation. Emergency services were alerted by Grimes’ sister, who reported a suicide attempt by the mother. Upon arrival at the Laurel Grove Condominiums, responders found Grimes injured on the couch.
An arrest warrant revealed that Grimes had a wrist injury and was bleeding, but the discovery of her daughter’s body in the residence was even more harrowing. Genesis was found positioned on a recliner, covered with a blanket or towel. Grimes reportedly confessed to police that she was responsible for her daughter’s death.
The scene was further disturbed by bloodstains in Grimes’ bedroom and bathroom, as well as blood-soaked clothing and bedding in a wardrobe box. Multiple knives with blood-like stains were found near the sink. Paramedics rushed Grimes to the hospital while she was still bleeding, where she allegedly admitted to the crime during transit.
In chilling texts to her sister, Grimes confessed to the stabbings and expressed concern for her daughter’s safety. Details of a previous conversation with her father hinted at fears for their well-being. Grimes believed that their lives were in danger and thought that a tragic outcome would be reversible, according to Sandy Springs Police Detective Isaiah Tomlin.
Grimes denied intending to harm her daughter, and investigations suggest no other individuals were present during the incident, ruling out a break-in. Grimes has been detained at Fulton County Jail pending a grand jury review of her case.
