“MPs Probe Prince Andrew’s Rent-Free Deal at Royal Lodge”

MPs are seeking clarifications regarding Prince Andrew’s rent-free agreement at Royal Lodge amidst the “serious and troubling accusations” against him. The disgraced royal is under pressure to vacate his 30-room Windsor residence due to his connections with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and the nominal rent deal he has enjoyed with the Crown Estate for over two decades.

The influential Parliamentary watchdog, known as the ‘queen of select committees,’ has urged the Treasury and Crown Estate to provide explanations regarding Andrew’s advantageous lease. Concerns have been raised about whether the taxpayer is being disadvantaged by the Royal Lodge arrangement, as profits from the Crown Estate typically contribute to public spending.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), responsible for overseeing prudent use of public funds, has requested an update on the lease status for the luxurious property. In a letter, PAC chairman Sir Geoffrey Clifton Brown emphasized the public interest in scrutinizing expenditures related to Prince Andrew, particularly in light of the serious allegations against him.

The PAC is troubled by the lease terms for Royal Lodge in the context of recent developments and changes in Prince Andrew’s responsibilities. The committee aims to ensure that the lease arrangements are cost-effective and justifiable compared to other potential uses of the property, including maintenance obligations to preserve the historic significance of the royal residence.

Upon receiving responses from the Crown Estate and Treasury by November 28, the PAC will decide on its next course of action. Prince Andrew secured a 75-year lease for Royal Lodge in 2003 for £1 million, paying a symbolic annual rent of one peppercorn if requested. Pressure is mounting on the monarchy to address the issues surrounding Andrew, with calls for parliamentary discussions on the matter.

Earlier this month, Andrew relinquished his Duke of York title following allegations of sexual misconduct by Virginia Giuffre. Despite his denials, the controversy persists, leading to scrutiny of his residence at Royal Lodge. Discussions are reportedly underway between Andrew and royal authorities regarding his departure from the property in exchange for alternative accommodations, including Frogmore Cottage and Adelaide Cottage.

The King faced public backlash recently over Andrew’s living arrangements, with questions raised about his knowledge of Andrew’s association with Epstein. The spotlight on Andrew intensified after reports emerged of continued contact with Epstein despite his claims to the contrary. Andrew’s denial of all allegations has not quelled the controversy, especially with the release of Ms. Giuffre’s memoir detailing her encounters with him.
