Australian Families Warn Against Laos Visits

The Morton-Bowles and Jones families from Australia faced a tragic ordeal when their teenage daughters, Holly Morton-Bowles and Bianca Jones, succumbed to methanol poisoning during a trip to Laos last year. The parents are now warning others against visiting the region, citing safety concerns and criticizing the handling of the investigation by Laotian authorities.

Holly and Bianca, both 19, were among a group of six individuals who fell ill after consuming contaminated drinks in Vang Vieng. Despite being airlifted to a hospital in Thailand for critical treatment, the young girls unfortunately did not survive. The toxic nature of methanol, a colorless and odorless substance, was highlighted as extremely dangerous even in small quantities.

Expressing their disappointment with the investigation process, the families accused the Laotian Government of negligence and corruption, emphasizing the lack of accountability and progress in the case. They urged Australians to reconsider visiting Laos, emphasizing the perceived lack of value for human life in the country.

Victoria’s Premier acknowledged the families’ frustrations over the unresolved investigation, with concerns raised about the apparent disregard for justice in the tragic deaths of the young women. Despite diplomatic exchanges between governments, the families expressed dismay over the lack of concrete action and communication from Laotian officials.

Efforts to seek answers and closure through media coverage, including an appearance on “60 Minutes,” were met with silence from Laotian authorities, further deepening the families’ anguish. Despite assurances of investigation and justice from the Lao Government, the affected families continue to face obstacles in their pursuit of truth and accountability for the loss of their loved ones.
