“Giovanna Fletcher Advocates for Safe Smartphone Use”

Giovanna and Tom Fletcher made the decision to provide their 11-year-old son with a mobile phone as he prepares to start secondary school in September.

Recognizing the need for effective communication and safety measures, Giovanna, aged 40, emphasized the importance of managing and safeguarding children’s access to various content.

Concerned about the prevalence of inappropriate content exposure and potential mental health impacts, Giovanna stressed the significance of open dialogues between parents and children to empower the latter.

Following the holiday season, numerous families have gifted smartphones to children, prompting discussions on the challenges and benefits associated with this technology.

In collaboration with Tesco Mobile, a campaign named The Family Chat has been launched to encourage families to engage in conversations about online device usage at every stage of their children’s development.

The campaign aims to highlight available resources and support, including age-specific toolkits and parental guidance provided by Tesco Mobile.

As part of the initiative, Giovanna expressed her enthusiasm for gaining valuable insights that can benefit her family. She emphasized the role of Tesco Mobile’s resources and online platform in simplifying the process of addressing online safety concerns.

Giovanna and her husband, Tom, who is a member of the band McFly and a children’s author, have two younger sons, aged seven and nine, who utilize tablets for communication with family members and gaming activities.

When their eldest son transitioned to high school, they provided him with a restricted smartphone for essential communication purposes, ensuring limitations on internet access and app downloads were in place.

Emphasizing the importance of ongoing conversations and setting boundaries, Giovanna highlighted the need for children to understand the rationale behind safety measures.

She also underscored the shared responsibility of parents to limit screen time and prioritize family interactions over device usage in certain settings.

Giovanna emphasized the gradual introduction of internet access to children and the importance of readiness in managing online exposure.

Offering advice on enhancing online safety for children, suggestions include setting up child accounts, ensuring accurate age verification, activating safety filters, utilizing parental controls, and maintaining open discussions about online activities.

Dr. Rebecca Whittington, an online safety editor at Reach, emphasized the significance of prioritizing safe device setups for children, particularly during the initial excitement of receiving a new phone.
