The remains of a father who went missing after falling from a ferry on Father’s Day have been recovered more than four months later. Mark Federspiel, 64, fell into the water while on a journey with his wife, Annette, from Gourock to Dunoon in Scotland on June 15. The incident occurred on the Sound of Shuna ferry, where he was visiting his daughter, Lara, to celebrate Father’s Day.
Annette raised the alarm when Mark did not return from the bathroom, but no one witnessed him falling overboard, and there were no CCTV recordings of the incident. A large-scale search operation involving various agencies, including the HM Coastguard, RNLI, and Police Scotland, was launched to find Mark, but initially, no sign of him was discovered.
Tragically, Mark’s family received devastating news when a body, confirmed to be his, was found at Kilcreggan Beach on October 12. Authorities have indicated that no foul play is suspected in his death, and formal identification has been completed with notification made to his next of kin.
Mark, known as “Mark the Shark” during his time as a US Navy diver, was undergoing treatment for a rare form of leukemia which affected his balance. Annette expressed her grief over the disappearance, stating the uncertainty of ever finding him. The couple had recently returned to Scotland for retirement after living in the US for several years.
In a heartfelt Facebook tribute before the discovery of his body, Annette described Mark as her soul mate and hero, expressing love and loss. She vowed to continue searching for him, reflecting the emotional toll of his disappearance.
