A young woman, Razan Ankour, residing in Glasgow, underwent a dental procedure that led to a severe infection, significantly altering her life. Following the removal of a wisdom tooth, she experienced excruciating pain, prompting an emergency visit to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Surgeons identified a severe infection and conducted urgent surgery to alleviate swelling in her jaw and neck by draining accumulated fluid.
The surgery resulted in a noticeable scar on Razan’s neck, akin to a knife wound, prompting her to seek reconstructive and laser treatments for its improvement. Initially referred by her GP to The Albion Clinic in Glasgow due to intense jaw discomfort hindering her ability to eat or close her mouth, Razan was informed that her wisdom tooth needed to be extracted. Post-procedure, she experienced significant swelling in her face and neck.
Recounting her ordeal to Glasgow Live, Razan described the ordeal of her jaw locking up by the third day, rendering her unrecognizable due to the extreme swelling. Hospitalized and diagnosed with a severe infection, she underwent a surgical procedure to drain the accumulated fluid under her jaw.
Subsequently, Razan endured months of challenges, including difficulty eating, loss of smell due to antibiotics, and delayed follow-up care and laser treatment. Despite seeking assistance from emergency services and dental clinics, she continues to experience pain and discomfort, impacting her self-esteem and mental well-being.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde conducted a review of Razan’s care at the hospital, affirming that she received appropriate and standard treatment. The health board extended apologies to Razan and encouraged her to reach out for support regarding any care-related concerns.
Although Razan has not yet filed a formal complaint against the dental practice, she has initiated a fundraiser to finance treatment aiming to repair the scar. The Albion Clinic is yet to provide a statement on the matter.
