“Business Secretary likens Farage to Enoch Powell”

Business Secretary Peter Kyle has likened Nigel Farage to the politics of Enoch Powell in today’s context. Kyle criticized the Reform UK leader during a speech at the Co-operative Party conference, emphasizing the importance of economic growth in rebuilding trust in politics and democracy.

Addressing the conference attendees in London, Kyle highlighted the necessity of sustained economic growth to reestablish the connection between people and politics, fostering trust in democratic processes and good governance. He warned that without economic prosperity, the allure of far-right parties promoting disruption and division grows stronger, citing Reform UK as a contemporary example akin to past parties like the National Front and the British National Party.

The comparison to Enoch Powell, known for his controversial “rivers of blood” speech in 1968, underscores Kyle’s criticism of Farage’s political stance. This is not the first time Kyle has clashed with Farage, previously challenging him on issues such as the Government’s Online Safety Act.

The Co-operative Party, in alliance with Labour through an electoral pact, also heard from Communities Secretary Steve Reed, who condemned parties like Reform UK for capitalizing on societal decline and division. Reed stressed the importance of uniting communities and transcending differences to collectively strive for success at the local level.
