One of the National Guard members who was targeted in an attack in Washington DC has tragically passed away, as confirmed by officials. President Trump announced the death of Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old female guard, during a Thanksgiving call with US service members on Thursday evening. The second National Guard member, Andrew Wolfe, 24, is currently in critical condition.
Sarah’s father, Gary Beckstrom, expressed the devastating reality of the situation, stating that her injuries were fatal and there was no hope for recovery. Governor Patrick Morrisey praised Sarah’s bravery and dedication to her duty, emphasizing her selfless sacrifice in serving her state and country.
The tragic incident involved an Afghan national, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who has been identified as the suspected shooter. The FBI is investigating the attack as an act of terror. Lakanwal allegedly ambushed the guards near the Farragut West Metro Station, injuring both Sarah and Andrew.
Following the shooting, the suspect was reportedly apprehended after being shot multiple times. Initially, there were conflicting reports about the guards’ conditions, but it was later clarified that they were both in critical condition and receiving medical treatment at separate hospitals.
President Trump expressed his condolences to the affected families and criticized the immigration policies under Joe Biden’s administration. Law enforcement sources reported that the attacker will face severe consequences for his actions. Additionally, immigration requests related to Afghan nationals have been halted indefinitely for security reassessment.
While condemning the attack, an Afghan advocacy group emphasized that such incidents should not lead to the mistreatment or isolation of Afghan immigrants in the United States.
