“Dr. Punam Krishan’s Guide to Life-Saving First Aid”

Accidents and health emergencies are common occurrences, and having the necessary skills to handle them can significantly impact the outcome, as noted by TV GP Dr. Punam Krishan.

Dr. Krishan, a media personality and renowned author, recounts a personal experience from her childhood when her grandfather suffered a fatal heart attack. This event led her to emphasize the importance of being prepared for emergencies. In her latest book, she shares practical and life-saving first aid techniques in a simple and accessible manner.

According to Dr. Krishan, teaching first aid should not be intimidating; it can be introduced through storytelling, play, repetition, and age-appropriate language to empower children without causing alarm. Basic skills such as calling for help and maintaining composure are crucial. Her book aims to facilitate these conversations in a gentle and reassuring way, boosting the confidence of both children and parents.

In collaboration with Dr. Barry Klaassen, the chief medical adviser at the British Red Cross, Dr. Krishan provides guidance on treating cuts, stings, allergies, identifying emergencies, and administering CPR. The advice and tips shared are suitable for individuals aged seven and above.

Having a fundamental understanding of first aid at home and in the workplace is essential. William Spencer, the Red Cross First Aid product manager, stresses the importance of everyone knowing how to assist in emergencies. The Red Cross offers free teaching resources for schools, known as First Aid Champions, as well as training for educators. Additionally, adults can utilize the free First Aid app and website for guidance on various first aid scenarios, emphasizing the necessity of being prepared with basic knowledge.

Dr. Krishan highlights the top five first aid skills that she believes everyone should learn:

1. **Emergency Calls**: Knowing when and how to seek help during emergencies is critical. Ensuring mobile phones are charged and accessible is vital in today’s world with fewer landlines.

2. **Recovery Position**: Safely positioning an unconscious individual who is breathing can help maintain an open airway until professional help arrives.

3. **Choking**: Understanding how to assist a choking individual, avoiding reaching into the throat, and seeking medical attention promptly are crucial.

4. **Bleeding**: Properly applying pressure to a wound to stop bleeding, seeking help, and keeping the individual stable are key actions during a bleeding emergency.

5. **Allergic Reactions**: Recognizing severe allergies, administering an EpiPen when necessary, and managing mild reactions with antihistamines and cold compresses are essential skills to have.

Being equipped with these basic first aid skills can make a significant difference in emergency situations.
