Calls for fairer taxation are growing louder.
A recent report released by Oxfam reveals that slightly over 50 individuals in the UK possess wealth greater than nearly half of the nation combined, underscoring a stark wealth disparity.
Millions of Britons grapple with energy, food, or housing poverty, or sometimes all three, which not only impacts their quality of life and future prospects for their children but also hampers economic growth. Poverty not only escalates social welfare, law enforcement, and healthcare expenses but stifles economic progress by hindering the potential of the population.
The existing tax structure is flagged as a major obstacle. The current system imposes significantly higher tax rates on individuals earning through manual labor compared to those earning through investments. While income from work is subject to income tax, wealth accumulation through investments is taxed at a lower rate, contributing to the wealth gap.
Advocates propose equalizing the taxation of all income sources to generate approximately £12 billion annually. Additionally, introducing a wealth tax, such as a 2% levy on wealth exceeding £10 million, affecting a mere 20,000 individuals but yielding £26 billion each year, could address fiscal deficits and bolster public services like the NHS.
The prevailing tax policies disproportionately burden the less affluent while favoring the wealthy, reflecting an imbalanced system designed by and for the affluent. Reforms are urged to create a fairer tax system that benefits all members of society, as taxation shapes the nation’s socioeconomic landscape, influencing the well-being of both the rich and the poor. A more equitable tax system is essential for a brighter future for all citizens.
