Descendant of Last UK Woman Executed Seeks Pardon

The descendants of the final woman to be executed in the United Kingdom are now requesting a pardon, asserting that she endured physical and emotional abuse from her partner before his killing. Ruth Ellis, a nightclub hostess, was put to death on July 13, 1955, after being found guilty of murdering her boyfriend, David Blakely. Laura Enston, Ellis’ granddaughter, expressed the profound impact of the execution on their family, highlighting the lasting trauma experienced by her mother and uncle, which has affected subsequent generations. The case, which unfolded outside The Magdala pub in London, involved a turbulent relationship marked by mutual infidelity, a terminated pregnancy, and instances of physical violence, including a miscarriage-inducing punch by Blakely.

During the mid-20th century, the British public was already questioning the relevance of capital punishment in society, and Ellis’s trial became a focal point in the debate over the death penalty’s place in contemporary Britain. Despite acknowledging the mistreatment she endured, the judge instructed the jury to disregard it as a defense, leading to Ellis’ quick conviction for murder and subsequent mandatory death sentence. Seeking a conditional pardon from Justice Secretary David Lammy, Ellis’ grandchildren aim to address the historical injustice and recognize the plight of all domestic abuse victims failed by the legal system.

Citing a greater understanding today of the impact of domestic abuse on victims’ mental well-being, Alex Bailin KC, representing Ellis’ family, highlighted how modern legal frameworks would have allowed for considerations like diminished responsibility or loss of control in her defense. A posthumous conditional pardon for Ruth Ellis is seen as a means to correct past wrongs and send a resounding message against violence towards women and girls.
