The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in approximately 250 postcode regions across England and Wales. This action coincides with the Met Office’s issuance of multiple winter weather alerts for the upcoming week. Eligible households, totaling over 500,000, will receive a £25 subsidy to help cover heating expenses.
Today, the new payments have been set in motion in 246 postcode areas, including locations such as Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, and sections of Wales and Northern Ireland. A detailed list of the postcodes qualifying for the payments can be found below.
These Cold Weather Payments benefit individuals in England and Wales who receive various benefits. Northern Ireland operates a similar program, while in Scotland, support for heating costs is provided throughout the winter without being tied to specific cold weather periods.
Since the start of winter, £25 payments have been triggered for 697 postcode areas, with 18 districts receiving two payments due to prolonged cold conditions lasting two weeks. In the latest round, an estimated 532,000 households will receive payments, with Greater Manchester accounting for approximately 336,000 of the recipients. The total expenditure on Cold Weather Payments today is projected to be £13.3 million.
For England and Wales, a payment is activated when an area is forecasted to experience temperatures below zero for seven consecutive days. Forecasters anticipate a cold spell leading into the New Year, with subzero temperatures anticipated in many regions.
An estimated 3.9 million people are eligible for Cold Weather Payments under the DWP’s scheme, including 1.2 million who receive Pensions Credit. Individuals receiving benefits such as Pension Credit, Income Support, JSA, ESA, Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest may qualify for the Cold Weather Payment, although eligibility is subject to specific criteria outlined on GOV.UK.
The £25 payments are directly deposited into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days, with a transaction reference that includes the customer’s National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’. Application for this payment is not required.
The Cold Weather Payments have been triggered by various weather stations, with estimated eligible household counts provided for each location, including those in Northern Ireland.
