“Soldier’s Sextortion Scheme Ravages Dozens of Minors”

An immoral soldier conducted a despicable sextortion scheme in which he coerced young individuals into engaging in sexual activities for him.

Austen Fleming, 29, described as “depraved,” enticed nearly 90 minors online while stationed as a soldier at RAF Dishforth in North Yorkshire. Pretending to be an “attractive” woman on fake social media profiles, the predator recorded his interactions with these minors to extort them into sending more explicit content.

Upon refusal, the soldier threatened to expose the images to the victims’ family and friends, leveraging this to manipulate the young individuals into providing further explicit material.

Initially apprehended on November 14, 2022, Fleming’s residence was searched for evidence, revealing the widespread nature of his offenses, necessitating the identification of victims nationwide.

Subsequently re-arrested on December 16, 2024, Fleming faced multiple charges including blackmail, inducing a child to partake in sexual activities, facilitating the exploitation of a child, and disseminating indecent images of children.

According to the Daily Record, one 15-year-old boy, severely affected by Fleming’s sextortion threats on Snapchat, attempted suicide. Testimonies in Leeds Crown Court detailed how other victims were left traumatized, crying, and trembling in fear due to the torment inflicted by the perpetrator.

Having served in the 6 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps, Fleming was sentenced to 24 years in prison and a three-year extended licence. He confessed to 83 cyber-enabled child sexual abuse and exploitation crimes, victimizing minors as young as 10 and as old as 17.

Frightened victims implored Fleming not to release their images online, but their pleas only escalated his demands for increasingly graphic and immoral content. The predator coerced children into sending explicit images alongside sleeping siblings and filming sexual acts involving family pets. The psychological trauma inflicted on one victim was so severe that he vomited while recounting his ordeal to his mother.

Judge Ray Singh highlighted how social media provided Fleming with easy access to victims, emphasizing the perpetrator’s extreme depravity. With 61 identified victims and an additional 27 yet to be identified, Fleming’s actions affected close to 100 individuals, each representing a real child subjected to abuse.

Detective Constable Tom Sutcliffe, leading the investigation for the Online Child Abuse Team, characterized Fleming as a depraved offender posing a significant threat to young people. The perpetrator now faces a lengthy prison term and stringent monitoring by authorities for life.
