As autumn progresses, falling leaves pose a potential threat to vehicles parked under certain trees, potentially leading to costly damages. Autotrader experts have issued a cautionary advisory, emphasizing the risk of tree-related stains on car paintwork.
Tom Roberts, the LCV Reviewer at Autotrader, underscores the significance of car maintenance during the colder and wetter seasons. He highlights the detrimental effects of tannins and organic acids released by common UK trees like oak and sycamore, which can cause staining and corrosion on car surfaces if not promptly addressed.
Roberts warns that larger vehicles such as MPVs are more susceptible to leaf accumulation due to their expansive roofs, necessitating proactive measures like regular leaf removal and consistent car washing to prevent potential harm. He stresses the importance of avoiding parking under specific tree types and advises against allowing fallen leaves to accumulate on vehicles for prolonged periods.
In addition, Roberts recommends seeking professional assistance for the removal of hardened sap to prevent further damage to the car’s paintwork. Applying a protective layer of wax or sealant can serve as an added safeguard against tree-related damages, potentially saving car owners from expensive repair costs and preserving the vehicle’s resale value.
Among the trees identified as ‘worst offenders,’ oak trees stand out for their high tannin content, which can result in stubborn stains on cars, particularly those with light-colored paint. Sycamore trees, although not native to the UK, also pose risks due to their sap production, potentially leading to mold growth and paintwork deterioration.
Similarly, Maple trees, commonly found in both rural and urban settings, and Pine trees, known for their sticky sap, can cause staining and corrosion, emphasizing the need for proactive car care measures. Silver birch, downy birch, wild cherry, and black poplar trees are highlighted for their production of corrosive sap that can damage car paintwork if not promptly addressed.
Car owners are advised to exercise caution when parking under or near trees during autumn and to implement preventive maintenance measures to safeguard their vehicles from potential tree-related damages.
