In a startling incident, a man suspected of shoplifting was caught on camera apparently trying to shoot a police officer from close range. Shane Newman, 21, and Katrina Jeffrey, 23, left a Canton, Ohio store with unpaid items, leading officers to escort them to the store’s loss prevention office.
During a search at the office, an officer questioned Newman about his hand in his pocket, leading to the discovery of a small container containing illegal substances. As Newman turned his back, he allegedly attempted to use a gun hidden in his bag against the officer, but it failed to discharge. A quick response from a Walmart security guard thwarted the situation.
Newman faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, assault on a peace officer, robbery, and drug possession. Due to his criminal record, he also faces charges related to possessing a weapon while prohibited. He is currently held at the Stark County jail. Additionally, authorities found ammunition in Jeffrey’s possession, resulting in charges of complicity in robbery and unlawful possession of ammunition.
Canton Police Chief John Gabbard commented on the incident, emphasizing the ongoing risk faced by law enforcement officers and expressing gratitude for the protective measures in place. The community’s support and prayers for the safety of officers were also acknowledged.
