More than a fortnight since the search commenced for the missing nine-year-old Melodee Buzzard, authorities have unveiled fresh information about the case, revealing a troubling development. The quest for Melodee was initiated on October 14 following concerns raised by a school official regarding her prolonged absence.
Law enforcement officers visited the family residence and engaged with Ashlee Buzzard, the 35-year-old mother of the child. Melodee was not present at the location, and officials stated that no credible account of her whereabouts was provided.
Recently released surveillance footage of Melodee captured her inside a car rental establishment in Santa Barbara on October 7, just a week before she was reported missing in Lompoc, her hometown situated about 55 miles away from the last known sighting. The images show Melodee donning a grey hooded sweatshirt and what appears to be a darker, straight-haired wig, as indicated in a police statement.
Investigators highlighted the possibility that the wig was utilized to modify Melodee’s appearance and noted that her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, is known to wear wigs as well. According to reports, Ashlee rented a white Chevrolet Malibu and subsequently embarked on a three-day road trip with Melodee from Lompoc, California, to the Nebraska region.
Authorities disclosed that the route of the trip encompassed Lompoc, Nebraska, and Kansas, and are now focused on discerning Melodee’s whereabouts during those three days and her current location. The FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office is aiding in the search, confirming Melodee’s potential presence with her mother on October 7 and their potential travel to Nebraska.
The rental vehicle is no longer under Ashlee’s possession, with authorities noting her lack of cooperation in providing any details about her daughter’s location. Melodee, due to her age and extended absence, is classified as at-risk. Sheriff Bill Brown emphasized the commitment to locating Melodee by pursuing all leads and urged the public to share any pertinent information.
The community’s apprehension for Melodee’s safety is echoed by the Sheriff’s Office, emphasizing the resolve to bring her back unharmed. There is hope that Melodee might be in the care of a relative or friend unaware of the circumstances surrounding her disappearance. Described as approximately 4 feet, 6 inches tall, weighing 60 pounds, with brown hair and eyes, Melodee’s safe return remains the top priority for law enforcement agencies.
