Russia initiated a series of destructive attacks in Ukraine, including a coordinated strike involving drones and guided bombs in the early hours. The assault targeted civilian structures and vital infrastructure in regions such as Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Odesa, Dnipro, and Sumy.
The strikes caused significant damage to residential buildings, schools, and other infrastructure. In Zaporizhzhia, Russian troops attacked the city, shattering windows in apartment buildings and a kindergarten, as reported by regional governor Ivan Fedorov.
While the extent of casualties remains unknown, the aftermath of the attack included broken windows in residential buildings and a kindergarten in one district of the city. Civilians and workers sought shelter as air raid warnings alerted Zaporizhzhia residents of an incoming guided bomb, prompting utility workers to address the damage swiftly.
In the Kharkiv region, the city of Chuhuiv faced a large-scale drone attack early Friday, with over ten drones targeting the area. Mayor Halyna Minaieva confirmed the attack, stating that civilian facilities were affected and fires broke out at the targeted locations.
In response to Russia’s attacks, Ukraine launched significant strikes on Russian energy plants and oil refineries this week, with the “Deep Strike” special forces unit orchestrating drone assaults. These strikes dealt a severe blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s resources, crippling one of Russia’s major oil refineries and a crucial Moscow power complex.
The Deep Strike unit’s actions aim to disrupt Russia’s financial means for fueling the conflict in Ukraine, targeting its oil exports that fund Putin’s military operations. By strategically targeting Russian energy infrastructure, Kyiv aims to pressure Moscow to halt hostilities and engage in peace negotiations.
Additionally, Ukraine’s Atesh partisan movement disclosed how one of its agents sabotaged a Russian military brigade’s truck to impede its deployment to the strategic city of Pokrovsk in Donetsk. The ongoing efforts to secure Pokrovsk have been met with fierce resistance from Russian forces, resulting in breaches in the city’s defenses and scattered troops in southern areas.
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia intensifies through cross-border missile exchanges, as Kyiv strives to dismantle Moscow’s financial support for Putin’s war while Russian forces target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure to wear down civilian morale.
Despite facing challenges, Ukraine’s defense efforts have been hindered by inconsistent support from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has vacillated on backing Kyiv, at times favoring Putin and blaming Ukrainian President Zelensky.
Kyiv has repeatedly requested additional air defense units to counter Russian attacks, which often result in suspected war crimes by deliberately targeting hospitals and schools.
